PM Sushila Karki says good governance, elections govt’s ‘sole focus’

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said her government has made good governance and elections its sole focus, stressing that the upcoming polls are the only viable path to stability and democratic renewal.

Addressing the nation on the completion of 100 days of the government formed after the Gen-Z movement, Prime Minister Karki said the administration is firmly committed to holding the House of Representatives election on March 5, 2026, in a free, fair and fear-free environment.

“Guided by the spirit of the Gen-Z movement, this government has made good governance and elections its sole focus,” she said. “Who wins or loses the election is secondary. What matters most is that our democracy and national integrity prevail.”

Calling for national unity, Prime Minister Karki urged citizens to view the upcoming election as a “national ritual” that will open the door to transformation. “Let us move the country in a new direction by binding ourselves in the thread of national unity,” she said. “This election will mark the beginning of a new, clean and golden chapter in Nepal’s politics.”

She dismissed rumors about possible delays or cancellation of the polls as baseless, asserting that the government is “rock-solid” in its resolve to conduct the election on schedule.

Referring to the violence following the Gen-Z movement, Prime Minister Karki said the country has returned to the path of peace after the tragic incidents of September 8 and 9. She said those who lost their lives have been declared martyrs, while treatment and livelihood support for the injured are underway. Reconstruction of damaged infrastructure has begun through a dedicated Physical Infrastructure Reconstruction Fund.

On election preparedness, the Prime Minister said an Integrated Election Security Plan has been approved, with deployment of the Nepal Army ensured. She said most of the 1,342 weapons looted during the unrest have been recovered, along with an additional 32 illegal firearms seized by police. A total of 465 damaged police offices have been brought back into operation.

She added that Rs 6.73 billion has been secured for the Election Commission, and that amendments to the voter registration law have enabled 837,000 new young voters to be added even after the election date announcement. More than 18.1 million voters are now eligible to vote, with 114 political parties participating in the process.

Addressing young voters, particularly Gen-Z, Prime Minister Karki said elections are not about victory or defeat, but about strengthening democracy and good governance. “Street movements raise questions, but the ballot provides solutions,” she said, assuring that the state will guarantee the security of every vote.

Highlighting governance reforms over the past 100 days, the Prime Minister said law enforcement and anti-graft agencies are now operating with full professional independence, taking action regardless of power or position. She said the government is cracking down on collusive contracting, misuse of state resources and stalled development projects.

She also cited measures to control unnecessary expenditure, including the withdrawal of unauthorized benefits, redeployment of 500 security personnel and vehicles, abolition of 38 unnecessary offices, and reduction of 323 positions. According to her, Rs 119 billion has been reprioritized toward major development projects.

Prime Minister Karki said over 50,000 public complaints have been addressed through the ‘Hello Government’ platform, while Kathmandu now receives 200 million liters of Melamchi water daily and an additional 101 MW of electricity has been added to the national grid.

Stressing patience, she said meaningful change cannot be achieved overnight and that institutionalizing the gains of the Gen-Z movement will require sustained effort and time.

“Chaos brings happiness to no one; only peace and stability open the door to prosperity,” she said, urging citizens to make the March 5 21 election a milestone for national renewal.
