Education Minister pledges action over TU land encroachment

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Mahabir Pun has said that the ministry will take necessary actions based on the recommendations of a probe committee formed to investigate the encroachment of Tribhuvan University (TU) land.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday after assuming office, Minister Pun said the ministry would forward certain issues raised by the committee to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) for further action.

“Large portions of TU land have been illegally occupied and misused for years for personal gain,” Pun said. “The ministry will act on the committee’s findings, and issues beyond our jurisdiction will be referred to the CIAA for investigation.”

Pun noted that the probe committee’s report was incomplete and called for a deeper investigation. “We are planning to form another committee to conduct a more detailed inquiry based on the recommendations of the first report,” he added.

He also revealed that the ministry had received complaints about land encroachment involving Sudurpaschim University. A separate committee will be formed to investigate those allegations, Pun said.

The minister further announced that the government has decided to introduce computer science as a 100-mark compulsory subject up to the secondary level, with the aim of ensuring that Nepali students keep pace with global technological advancements.
