Body of Bipin Joshi brought home

KATHMANDU: The body of Bipin Joshi, the Nepali student killed during the Hamas attacks in Israel last year, was brought to Kathmandu on Monday morning.

Prime Minister, ministers, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at Tribhuvan International Airport to pay their final respects upon the arrival of the remains.

According to officials, Joshi’s body will be taken to his hometown in Bhimdattanagar Municipality, Kanchanpur, later today, where his final rites will be performed.

Joshi, who had gone to Israel under a student exchange programme, was among those taken hostage by Hamas militants during the October 7, 2023, attack on the Kibbutz region. His whereabouts had remained unknown for several weeks until October 13, when Israeli authorities confirmed his death.

Following a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, the militant group handed over a body identified as Joshi’s to the Israeli military. DNA testing later confirmed that the remains indeed belonged to him.

Forensic examinations conducted in Israel revealed that Joshi had died during the initial abduction, according to officials at the Nepali Embassy in Tel Aviv.
