Government buildings damaged in Gen-Z movement undergo inspection

KATHMANDU: Cleaning and technical inspection have begun on government buildings damaged by arson during the Gen-Z movement.

Authorities have stated that the affected structures will only be used after detailed technical assessments. On Saturday, the Ministry of Health and Population building at Ramshah Path, which was severely damaged during the protests, underwent cleaning and structural inspection.

According to Subash Chandra Baral, President of the Nepal Engineers’ Association, the ministry building cannot be reused even after repairs, as the slabs have been completely compromised, posing serious risks.

Although the walls remain intact, Baral explained that the building is unsafe for further use. The association, in coordination with the Department of Building, has begun preliminary assessments of destroyed structures. Recommendations will be made on how to reconstruct them.

Baral added that while some buildings inside Singha Durbar can still be used, others remain hazardous. Similarly, the northern block of the Supreme Court has been declared unfit for use, while the southern section poses relatively lower risk. The association has advised that no damaged structure be reused without full technical inspection.
