Wild elephant found dead in Jhapa’s Mechinagar

JHAPA: A wild elephant was found dead early Saturday morning in a paddy field in Deviganj, Mechinagar Municipality-1, Jhapa. Locals discovered the adult female elephant in a lifeless state, prompting authorities to respond.

Bharat Babu Shrestha, Chief of the Division Forest Office in Jhapa, confirmed that a post-mortem is being arranged to determine the cause of death. A forest office team has already arrived at the site to investigate.

Wildlife conservationist Shankar Luintel said the elephant was approximately 22 years old. He added that authorities had received reports of 12 elephants entering the area from India the previous evening. “This morning, we received the news that one of the elephants had died,” Luintel said.

The exact cause of death remains unknown and will be clarified after the post-mortem, Shrestha said.
