Birgunj’s historic Ghanta Ghar repaired after seven months

BIRGUNJ: The iconic Ghanta Ghar (clock tower) of Birgunj, a landmark of the city’s heritage, has been repaired and restored seven months after part of its structure collapsed due to wear and tear.

The balcony portion of the tower had fallen, raising concerns over the preservation of one of Birgunj’s most recognizable monuments. Birgunj Metropolitan City has since reconstructed the damaged section and repainted the tower, giving it back much of its original appearance.

Prabhat Jha, head of the Land Management and Urban Development Department of the metropolis, said the repair process was carried out manually to preserve the integrity of the historic structure. “It was not possible to maintain the tower using heavy machinery,” Jha explained. “The manual work took more time, but it was necessary for heritage conservation.”

Given the heavy traffic surrounding Ghanta Ghar, safety precautions were taken during repairs, including the use of construction nets to protect vehicles and pedestrians.

Officials estimate that with the latest restoration, the clock tower will remain durable for at least another decade.

The Ghanta Ghar continues to stand as a cultural and historical symbol of Birgunj, drawing both locals and visitors to the bustling heart of the city.
