KMC to conduct festival market inspections

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced that it will begin market inspections targeting the upcoming festive season from next week.

According to KMC Assistant Spokesperson Dhruba Kumar Kafle, the inspections had been postponed by a week due to the Gen-Z movement on September 8 and 9. With the Hindu festival of Dashain approaching, the metropolis is now preparing to carry out the monitoring.

“KMC carries out such inspections in coordination with central monitoring teams and security agencies,” Kafle said, adding that the recent unrest had delayed government mechanisms from resuming regular work.

The inspection team will be led by Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, who also heads the Market Management and Consumer Protection Committee. The team will monitor key market areas including Tukucha vegetable market, livestock markets, and the Food Corporation’s fair-price outlets.

In past years, KMC has inspected supermarkets and food outlets to check pricing, production dates, expiry dates, and compliance with maximum retail prices. The metropolis has warned that violations or consumer exploitation will result in fines and further legal action.

KMC has also urged consumers to remain vigilant to ensure clean, quality products at fair prices. While the city regularly monitors markets, festival season inspections are carried out more systematically.

Earlier this monsoon, KMC destroyed around 300 substandard bottled water jars during inspections. Similarly, based on consumer complaints, the city imposed a fine of Rs 200,000 on hotels and sweet shops after discovering expired food items.
