RSP says signature collection by NC and UML poses serious threat to democracy

KATHMANDU: The opposition Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has expressed concern that the signature collection campaign conducted by the ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML poses a significant threat to democracy.

Speaking during the allotted urgent time at the start of Wednesday’s House of Representatives session, RSP Chief Whip Santosh Pariyar criticized the signatures gathered by Congress and UML.

“Yesterday’s farce at Baluwatar and Singha Durbar has hurt the dignity of this respected House. The degradation of a responsible position like the Deputy Speaker of the Sovereign Parliament by those claiming to uphold the heritage of democracy is, in RSP’s view, a very serious threat to democracy,” Pariyar said.

He also urged NC leaders to recall the legacy of founding leader BP Koirala, who was willing to sacrifice for democracy, and asked CPN-UML leaders to remember Madan Bhandari, who strongly opposed feudalism.

“Look back at BP Koirala, who was ready to lose for the sake of democracy, my respected leaders in Nepali Congress,” he said. “And I want to remind my respected leaders in CPN-UML of Comrade Madan Bhandari, who warned that not only feudalism but even feudal tendencies within the party cannot be tolerated.”
