‘Mohar’ is a voice against superstition: Director Om Prateek

KATHMANDU: Writer and movie director Om Prateek has said that movie ‘Mohar’, releasing on August 8, is aimed at raising awareness against harmful superstitions, particularly the practice of offering young girls as Deuki in the name of serving deities.

Speaking at a program held today at a movie theater in Kamalpokhari to launch the film’s title song, Director Prateek stated that Mohar delivers a strong message against traditional social violence inflicted on girls under the guise of culture and belief.

“To my knowledge, the Deuki practice was ongoing until 2079 B.S. That’s why we chose to tell the story in a contemporary setting,” Prateek said. “The film sends a clear message: violence against girls, no matter the excuse, must be eradicated. Mohar blends entertainment with a call to confront social evils.”

He added that film was chosen as the medium because it allows for powerful storytelling that can highlight and challenge social issues effectively.

The cast of ‘Mohar’ includes Pal Shah, Benisha Hamal, Niti Shah, Arjun Jung Shahi, and Miss Pabi. Actress Niti Shah described the film as a blend of social reality and rebellion, and expressed confidence in its impact.

“The film incorporates one of our deeply saddening traditions alongside entertainment. I believe that even if in a small way, Mohar can help reduce violence against women and girls,” she said.

‘Mohar’ features editing by Bhupendra Adhikari, cinematography by Dipen Basnyat, choreography by Ramji Lamichhane and Kabiraj Gahatraj, and fight direction by Kumar Maharjan.
