Light to heavy rainfall expected across Nepal today

KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has released today’s weather update (Ashar 6, Friday), forecasting varying rainfall across the country.

The Division has predicted light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning this afternoon in some hilly areas and scattered parts of other regions.

Heavy rainfall is expected at one or two locations in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces. Light rain or snowfall may occur in a few high hill and mountainous areas, while windstorms are possible in parts of the Terai in Koshi and Madhes Provinces.

During the night, light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is expected at some places in the hilly areas and a few other locations across the country.

Heavy rainfall may occur at one or two places in Koshi Province, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province, and Lumbini Province. Light rainfall or snowfall may also occur in a few places in the high hills and mountainous areas.

Meteorologists classify rainfall intensity as follows: light rainfall is less than 10 millimeters in 24 hours, moderate rainfall ranges from 10 to 50 millimeters, heavy rainfall is between 50 and 100 millimeters, very heavy rainfall falls between 100 and 200 millimeters, and extremely heavy rainfall is above 200 millimeters.

The Division has also explained the terminology used for rainfall coverage in terms of the percentage of the area affected. When rainfall is expected in one or two places, it means less than 10 percent of the area is affected.

If rainfall is expected in a few places, it covers 10 to 30 percent of the area. Some places correspond to 30 to 50 percent coverage, many places indicate 50 to 80 percent, and most places refer to more than 80 percent of the area.

The Weather Forecasting Division advises the public to remain alert, especially in regions at risk of heavy rainfall and windstorms.
