Supreme Court clears way for Biswo Paudel’s appointment as Governor

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ruled that there is no legal barrier to Dr. Biswo Paudel’s appointment as Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.

On Tuesday, a single bench of Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla upheld a previous administrative decision by the Supreme Court to reject a writ petition that sought to block Paudel’s appointment. This effectively clears the path for his appointment.

Advocates Pratibha Upreti and Bishal Thapa had filed the writ petition on May 13, arguing that Paudel’s past political affiliation disqualified him from holding the central bank’s top post. The court had already dismissed their petition on May 16.

The petitioners claimed that Paudel, a central committee member of the Nepali Congress and a former parliamentary candidate who lost in the 2022 election, should not be eligible for the role of Governor. However, the court found no legal grounds to prevent his appointment.
