Cancer hospital official sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for bribery

KATHMANDU: Amrita Koirala, an employee at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Bharatpur, has been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for accepting a bribe of Rs. 600,000 in connection with hospital drug procurement.

The Special Court in Kathmandu ruled on Thursday that Koirala took the bribe in both cash and check in exchange for facilitating payment to a drug supplier.

Investigations by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) revealed that Koirala, who worked as an accounts officer, had Rs. 150,000 hidden in her scooter and Rs. 450,000 deposited at Narayan Development Bank.

The court found her guilty based on evidence of the bribe amount and 17 recorded phone conversations with the drug supplier. Along with her prison sentence, she has also been ordered to pay Rs. 600,000 in fines.
