KATHMANDU: The government has decided to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the devastating floods, landslides, and inundations that struck various parts of the country in September 2024.
The decision was made during the 30th meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Executive Committee, held at Singha Durbar on Thursday. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak stated that the damage assessment will focus on Bagmati, Koshi Province, and other areas severely affected by incessant rains in September 2024.
“The process of collecting data on the extent of the damage will begin within the next week,” said Minister Lekhak. “Following the assessment, the government will proceed with the construction of temporary shelters in areas where houses were temporarily built and permanent homes in locations where permanent structures existed before the disaster.”
The meeting also discussed measures to strengthen disaster preparedness and minimize risks from future natural calamities. Minister Lekhak emphasized the importance of proactive planning to mitigate potential risks and safeguard communities.
Additionally, the minister highlighted progress in reconstructing permanent houses following the earthquake in Western Nepal. Reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts are advancing in Jajarkot, with grants being dispatched from the central government to support rebuilding efforts.
