Oli slams government over Durga Prasai’s arrest, calls it a human rights violation

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Wednesday criticized the government for arresting Durga Prasai, alleging the move was aimed at covering up official wrongdoings.

Speaking at an interaction program on the role of local representatives organized by the UML’s Local Development Department in Chyasal, Oli condemned the arrest of a person while asleep at midnight, calling it an act against humanity.

He pointed out that even the National Human Rights Commission has stated that Prasai’s detention based solely on his statements violates human rights. “The government cannot keep him in custody. Arresting someone for simply speaking out is unacceptable,” Oli said.

Oli also questioned whether the government has any response to the video released by Prasai earlier in the day. “Problems cannot be solved by arresting someone and silencing them. I urge the government to immediately release Durga Prasai. Can someone be imprisoned just for speaking?” he asked.
