Oli: Elections cannot be held with thousands of criminals roaming free

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML chair and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli has said that he is on a mission to build the country.

Speaking at an editors’ discussion organized by Press Chautari Nepal on Sunday, Oli stated that he would not bow down to “foreign puppets.” He criticized the current government for restricting his movement within the country, questioning, “What kind of government is this?”

Oli claimed that the government withdrew his security personnel even when there were security threats against him, while increasing protection for what he called “its own groups.” He also remarked that security had been tightened for local representatives, taking a jab at Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah.

Oli predicted that calls for his return as prime minister would soon arise, saying, “Editors themselves will be forced to write editorials calling for KP Oli’s return.”

He clarified that he had not given the order to open fire during the incident of September 8, adding that the prime minister does not have such authority. “My own house was set on fire. How can I be held responsible for that?” he questioned.

Oli criticized what he described as criminal activities being carried out in the name of the Gen-Z movement and lamented that journalists had remained silent about it. “The media should have spoken up and written about such wrongdoing,” he said.

Stating that there is no alternative to the parliamentary system, Oli urged editors to support that stance.

He also expressed surprise that some editors who once accused him of regression for dissolving parliament now seem to support parliamentary dissolution.

Oli stressed that while he values elections, they cannot take place “with hundreds of guns and thousands of criminals still outside.” He said that UML is not attempting to boycott the polls, but that the current government is incapable of holding elections.
