Nepal Sambat to be included on Nepali banknotes

BHAKTAPUR: Starting this year, the Nepal Sambat date will be printed on Nepali currency notes.

The announcement was made at a press conference organized in Bhaktapur by the Shankhadhar Sakhwa Foundation, which informed that a formal declaration will be made during a special event on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1146 New Year.

The program, scheduled for Wednesday, will include a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Shankhadhar Sakhwa, and will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

Foundation Chairperson Gyanram Shrestha stated that an agreement had been reached following discussions with the Prime Minister. “Nepal Sambat is not just a calendar of the Newar community, but a national calendar belonging to all Nepalis. After discussions with the Prime Minister, preparations are underway to announce this officially on Wednesday,” he said.

Former Foundation Chairman Shyam Krishna Manandhar said preparations for the event have been completed. He also highlighted the historical significance of Shankhadhar Sakhwa—who initiated Nepal Sambat by freeing people from debt—and the efforts being made to promote his legacy by installing statues of him in Nepal and abroad.
