CHITWAN: Construction of the Gautam Buddha International Cricket Stadium in Bharatpur has reached 40 percent completion. The project, initiated by Bharatpur Metropolitan City with support from both the provincial and federal governments, is progressing steadily.
According to city engineer Ghanashyam Mishra, current works include construction of the parapets and the second floor of both VIP towers. “We are currently tying trusses and rods for the parapets and towers, and constructing the tower walls. Each tower will have three stories,” Mishra said.
He added that slope work is underway to create rooms behind the parapets. The stadium will feature four parapets and two towers in total. Around 122 workers are employed daily on the project.
However, Mishra noted that the number may temporarily decrease during the Tihar festival, particularly among Muslim workers, with work expected to pick up again after Chhath.
As per the contract, 48 percent of the construction was expected to be completed by now, but the project has experienced slight delays.
The project was handed over to Bharatpur Metropolitan City after the Dhurmus-Suntali Foundation failed to complete it. Construction is now being carried out by Himalayan Kalinchowk BBR JV, under a contract valued at Rs 785.91 million.
Upon completion of the first phase, the stadium will be capable of hosting international-level matches. Phase one includes a 15,000-capacity parapet, two VIP towers, a playing field with five pitches, a drainage system, fencing, access roads, and a parking area.
Additional facilities to increase seating capacity will be added in the second phase. The stadium is being built on 20 bighas and 19 kathas of land currently owned by the Agriculture and Forestry University under Tribhuvan University. It is located in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-15.
The stadium aims to meet international standards and establish Bharatpur as a hub for major cricket tournaments.
