Nepali youth missing in Portugal, family appeals for help

LISBON: A 34-year-old Nepali youth who had been working in Portugal has gone missing, prompting his family and friends to appeal for help in locating him.

Jitendra Pandey, a resident of Pipalpani, Bhanu Municipality-9 in Tanahun, had been living and working in Portugal for the past two years. He has been missing since last Monday from the Sintra area, near the capital Lisbon, according to his friend Bidur Tamang.

Tamang said that Pandey had visited his house last Sunday night after receiving a call from another friend. However, since then, he has not been in contact. When Pandey failed to show up at work on Monday—even after asking a coworker to bring him food—his friends began to worry.

“After we couldn’t reach him, we informed his family in Nepal,” said Tamang. “They told us he had called earlier and mentioned he wouldn’t be in contact for a few days. Since then, there has been complete silence.” The local police were notified of his disappearance on Tuesday through his employer.

Pandey’s residence card, bank card, passport, and all personal belongings were found intact in his room. He leaves behind elderly parents and sisters in Nepal.

Prakashmani Paudel, Nepal’s Ambassador to Portugal, confirmed to Rasus that the embassy was informed as soon as the news broke and that they have requested the local police to conduct a thorough search. “We are doing everything we can to assist in locating him,” said Ambassador Paudel.

Pandey had arrived in Portugal two years ago via Croatia and was working in a packing company in Sintra.
