KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba required 12 stitches to the back of his head after being assaulted during the Gen-Z protests on September 9, party officials have confirmed.
Deuba, who is currently undergoing treatment at the Army Hospital in Chhauni, sustained deep wounds when protesters stormed his private residence in Budhanilkantha. According to the party, the attackers used sharp and blunt objects during the assault, leaving the former prime minister with injuries to the head and neck.
“Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and central member Arzu Rana Deuba were subjected to inhumane and barbaric physical attacks, and their residence was set on fire,” party spokesperson and head of publicity Min Bahadur Bishwakarma said after Friday’s meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee. The meeting, held at the NC headquarters in Sanepa, unanimously condemned the attack.
Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka briefed the meeting on the health conditions of the couple, saying both were showing signs of gradual recovery. Bishwakarma said that Deuba’s injuries initially caused panic among colleagues and doctors. “The gash at the back of his head, just above the neck, was serious enough to require 12 stitches,” he said.
Doctors have advised that Deuba remain in hospital for several more days due to dizziness and difficulty speaking. “He is walking, talking on the phone, and in contact with the party, but doctors have recommended close observation,” Bishwakarma said.
He also said medical staff had confirmed that Deuba was struck with a sharp weapon, and evidence suggested attackers had used tools such as wrenches, hammers, and iron rods during the assault. “The injuries were deep, which is why stitching was necessary. Fortunately, his condition is improving, and we are hopeful for a full recovery soon,” Bishwakarma said.
