Ruling parties not to move ahead with impeachment motion against Deputy Speaker

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have decided not to immediately pursue an impeachment motion against Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar. The decision comes amid reports that both parties were collecting signatures to initiate impeachment proceedings.

Mahesh Bartaula, Chief Whip of CPN-UML, clarified that neither the coalition nor the ruling parties have reached a conclusion to file an impeachment against Deputy Speaker Rana Magar.

The news of a signature collection campaign to remove Rana Magar, who is also a parliamentarian from the Rastriya Swatantra Party, sparked widespread speculation.

Bartaula, however, denied these claims, stating that “No signature campaign has been conducted. Some matters concerning the Deputy Speaker have been raised in Parliament, and the Rastriya Swatantra Party is currently boycotting Parliament. There are ongoing issues regarding letters she sent to the U.S. Embassy involving unrelated individuals, which have not yet been fully addressed in Parliament.”

He said the reports suggesting the ruling parties planned to submit an impeachment proposal were false. “The main issue is whether the Deputy Speaker’s actions are in accordance with her position. Parliament must address the matters raised. Today, the ruling parties have no plan to submit any proposal against her,” Bartaula said.

He also noted that further discussions regarding the Deputy Speaker may occur in Parliament, but reiterated that no preparation for impeachment is underway and that the government is responsible for responding to any related issues. “Currently, no impeachment motion will be initiated in Parliament,” he added.
