Health workers’ committee protests expansion of MBBS, BDS seats in private colleges

KATHMANDU: The Struggle Committee for a Safe Workplace for Health Workers has strongly objected to the Medical Education Commission’s decision to increase the number of seats in MBBS and BDS programs at private medical colleges.

In a statement issued on Monday, the committee described the decision as biased and unscientific, demanding its immediate withdrawal. It argued that most colleges lack the capacity to accommodate more than 100 students, yet the commission has allowed higher intakes, which it warned would compromise the quality of medical education.

“This move risks producing incompetent doctors in the future and could push the country’s healthcare system into a serious crisis,” the committee said.

The statement further accused the commission of ignoring its own surveys and data, alleging that the decision primarily serves the financial interests of private medical colleges. The committee warned that the policy would increase the financial burden on students and have direct negative consequences on public health.

“Such haphazard decisions, made in the name of medical education reform, will have a detrimental impact on the overall health education system of the country. The decision must be corrected immediately,” the statement read.

The committee also threatened to launch street protests if its concerns are not addressed.
