UML politburo passes statute amendment proposal unanimously

KATHMANDU: The politburo of the CPN-UML has unanimously endorsed the statute amendment proposal that had been passed earlier by the party’s central secretariat.

The decision was made during the fourth full meeting of the politburo held at the party headquarters in Chyasal, Lalitpur on Saturday.

According to Rajendra Gautam, head of the party’s publicity department, Vice Chair Bishnu Prasad Paudel had presented the amendment proposal during the session.

Gautam said that 68 politburo members shared their views on the proposal during the meeting chaired by Prime Minister and party chair KP Sharma Oli.

The revised statute includes provisions to eliminate the existing dual structure of organized and general membership, remove the age limit of 70 years for leadership roles, and scrap the two-term limit for party leadership. It also proposes transforming the district committees into executive committees.

The meeting also held serious discussions on former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s renewal of party membership and her potential return to active politics. Gautam stated that while a conclusion was not reached, many politburo members raised concerns over the implications of a former head of state, who once served as a constitutional guardian, reentering partisan politics.

He added that the issue of Bhandari’s involvement would be further discussed in the upcoming central committee meeting. “The party holds no bias or prejudice against former President Bhandari. She was entrusted with the highest office by this party, and the discussion today was both serious and constructive,” said Gautam.

The endorsed amendment proposal will be presented to the central committee on July 21. UML’s statute convention is scheduled to be held from September 5 to 7 at the Sunrise International Convention Centre in Godawari, Lalitpur.
