Nepal Citizenship Bill report presented in HoR

KATHMANDU: The report on the Nepal Citizenship (Second Amendment) Bill, prepared by the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, was tabled in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

Presenting the report, Committee Chairperson Ramhari Khatiwada informed the House that the committee had reached a consensus on key provisions aimed at ensuring that all eligible Nepali citizens are granted citizenship.

He highlighted that the revised bill includes provisions allowing individuals to obtain citizenship through their mother’s name alone.

“The committee has agreed to make arrangements so that citizenship can be obtained even in the absence of a father’s identity, through the mother’s name alone. This is a major step toward ensuring inclusive and accessible citizenship rights,” Khatiwada said.

The bill, which seeks to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2006, was previously referred to the committee for further discussion during the House session on March 31. The committee completed its review and passed the report on June 10.

The bill is seen as a significant legislative step toward addressing longstanding concerns over statelessness and gender discrimination in citizenship law. It will now move forward for deliberation and potential endorsement by the full House.
