Heavy rainfall expected across Nepal today

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division has predicted rainfall across all provinces today (Thursday), with particularly heavy showers expected in four provinces.

The bulletin released early this morning highlights the potential for varied rainfall intensity, ranging from light drizzle to very heavy downpours in certain areas.

In addition, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in one or two locations within Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces. There is also a chance of light rain or snowfall in a few high-altitude areas of the country’s hilly and mountainous regions.

Tonight, light to moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is anticipated in some places in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as in a few areas of the other provinces.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in one or two places in Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces. Light rain or snowfall is also possible in some high hilly and mountainous areas.

Meteorologists classify rainfall amounts within 24 hours as follows: less than 10 millimeters is light rain; 10 to 50 millimeters is moderate rain; 50 to 100 millimeters is heavy rain; 100 to 200 millimeters is very heavy rain; and over 200 millimeters is considered extremely heavy rain.

The terms describing rainfall coverage relate to the percentage of the area expected to receive rain. Rain in one or two places means rainfall is expected in less than 10 percent of the area in a province, while rain in a few places indicates rainfall in 10 to 30 percent of the area.

Rain in some places refers to coverage of 30 to 50 percent, rain in many places means 50 to 80 percent of the area is likely to receive rain, and rain in most places indicates more than 80 percent coverage.

Currently, the monsoon has spread to some parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki provinces, and parts of eastern Lumbini Province. The rest of the country remains influenced by westerly and local winds.
