COVID-19 risk persists at border checkpoints

KANCHANPUR: The risk of COVID-19 remains a concern at the border checkpoints in the Sudurpaschim Province of Nepal, which are connected to India.

On Wednesday, a resident of Bardiya who had returned from Haldwani, India, via the Gaddachauki checkpoint on the western border, tested positive for COVID-19 and is now receiving treatment in isolation at Mahakali Provincial Hospital, Mahendranagar.

His condition was reported to be serious at the time of arrival. The positive result was confirmed through an antigen test conducted at the health desk at the border.

“The patient who returned from India had a high fever, respiratory issues, and cold symptoms,” said Hemraj Joshi, Information Officer at the Far West Province Emergency Operations Center. “Following a positive antigen test, he was immediately admitted for isolation treatment.”

Antigen tests were conducted on five individuals suspected of infection upon arrival at the checkpoint; only one tested positive.

Dr. Arjun Bhatta, Medical Superintendent of Mahakali Provincial Hospital, said the condition of the patient in isolation has improved since this morning. He noted that this is the first patient being treated in isolation since COVID-19 cases began to rise again.

Dr. Bhatta emphasized the need for increased health precautions, including the use of masks and sanitizers, particularly for those returning from India. He urged individuals who test positive to observe proper quarantine or home isolation protocols to prevent community transmission.

Antigen testing facilities have been established at health desks in five border areas of the province: Gaddachauki in Kanchanpur, Gaurifanta and Khakraula in Kailali, Jhulaghat in Baitadi, and Pulghat in Darchula. Health workers stationed at these points are actively screening returnees and testing suspected cases.
