‘Samba Chowk’ named in honor of footballer Sabitra Bhandari

LAMJUNG: In recognition of Nepal’s women’s football player Sabitra Bhandari, a section of Masryangdi Rural Municipality–9, specifically the area across the Khudipul Bridge, has been named ‘Samba Chowk.’

At a special ceremony held today, the junction near Pamchowk, Sabitra’s hometown, was officially renamed in her honor.

Masryangdi Rural Municipality Chair Arjun Gurung unveiled a photograph of Sabitra and announced the new name. He stated that Sabitra, a daughter of the local community, has brought pride not just to the municipality and district but has represented Nepal on the global stage through football.

He added that this naming aims to inspire Sabitra further and celebrate her accomplishments in the sport.

Chief District Officer Madhav Prasad Pokharel remarked that naming the junction after a figure like Sabitra is a recognition of her contributions and a matter of pride for the entire district. He also acknowledged the role played by the Armed Police Force in shaping her football journey.

Sabitra’s father, Thaman Bahadur Bhandari, expressed his happiness at the naming of the chowk after his daughter. He said such recognition will motivate her to go even further in her football career, as she continues to promote Nepal through her achievements.

Ward Chair Harischandra Thapa of Ward No. 9 said that naming the chowk — located on the road leading to the Annapurna Circuit and Manang — will help raise the profile of Sabitra’s birthplace and strengthen its identity.

Known by her nickname “Samba,” Sabitra began her professional football career with the Armed Police Force (APF) Club. She is currently the highest goal scorer for the Nepal national women’s football team and holds the record for the most international goals scored by a Nepali player. She was raised in Pamchowk village, formerly Simpani VDC–7, now part of Masryangdi Rural Municipality–9.
