Shankar Pokharel calls for immediate relocation of vulnerable Himalayan settlements

KATHMANDU: General Secretary of CPN-UML, Shankar Pokharel, has stressed the urgent need to relocate vulnerable Himalayan settlements to safer locations.

Through a social media statement, Pokharel highlighted the recent landslide in Namkha, Humla, which has rendered many residents homeless. He emphasized the necessity of relocating such at-risk communities without delay.

“While discussions on the impacts of climate change in the Himalayas are taking place under the Sagarmatha Sambaad, the landslide in Namkha, Humla has displaced many families,” he wrote. “It is now essential to identify vulnerable settlements across the Himalayan region and develop relocation plans without further delay.”

Pokharel further underscored the importance of identifying safe zones for relocation and called for separating such areas from forest and conservation zones to facilitate the development of secure resettlements.
