Nepal Teachers’ Federation objects to parliamentary sub-committee report

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation (NTF) has expressed strong objections to a recent report submitted by a sub-committee under the Education Committee of the Federal Parliament.

NTF Chairperson Laxmi Kishor Subedi voiced his dissatisfaction via Facebook, stating that the sub-committee’s report contradicts the essence of the Kathmandu-based protest movement that has been ongoing for nearly a month.

Subedi remarked that the sub-committee’s report is even more regressive and anti-teacher than the existing education bill currently registered in Parliament.

He wrote, “The report submitted by the sub-committee formed under the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee appears, in many respects, more regressive and teacher-employee-unfriendly than the current bill under consideration.”

Subedi further criticized the report for failing to address key demands, stating, “It does not ensure justice for relief teachers of temporary nature, those from former lower secondary schools, temporary and contract-based teachers, grant-supported instructors, technical stream teachers, and those in special education.

The provision for periodic promotions is like a land plot on the moon—promised but unreachable. The proposed transfer system is even more detrimental to teachers, the issue of counting temporary service remains unresolved, and disciplinary actions remain unchanged.”

He concluded by stating that, judging by the government’s current approach, a more intense struggle seems inevitable.
