KMC moves to digitize community schools

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has begun equipping community schools with digital infrastructure.

As part of this initiative, KMC-26 has handed over 20 digital smart boards to Shanti Vidya Griha Secondary School in Lainchaur.

The boards, each measuring 65 inches, were handed over by Ward Chairman Khyamraj Tiwari to the school’s principal, Shiva Kumari Baral Ghimire, at a formal event held on Thursday. The equipment was procured through the public procurement process at a cost of Rs. 4,359,540.

Speaking at the event, Chairman Tiwari emphasized the importance of using the provided technology effectively.

“Infrastructure, equipment, and technology are the foundation for quality education programs. But without proper utilization, we won’t see any results,” he said. He also urged teachers to adapt to changing times and become skilled in digital teaching. “If training is needed, KMC is ready to provide it,” he added.

Tiwari also announced that a plan to establish a computer lab worth Rs. 4 million is currently underway and in the procurement phase.

School Management Committee Chairman Bhandari highlighted the need to implement forward-looking programs today, with a vision for the next decade of educational transformation. Meanwhile, Ward Secretary Kedar Rimal said the investment aligns with KMC’s mission to produce globally competitive human resources by aligning local educational settings with international trends.

This initiative is part of KMC’s Gaurav Yojana, under the program titled ‘Education for Eating, Desire of the Metropolitan’, which has allocated approximately Rs. 200 million for making community schools IT-friendly and promoting digital learning.

A few days ago, KMC had also installed smart boards at Padmodaya Secondary School in Ramshah Path, marking the beginning of a wider campaign to digitize classrooms across the city. The smart boards are reported to have a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours, ensuring long-term use in teaching and learning activities.
