Kathmandu police arrest man for social media character assassination

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested 41-year-old Nunu Raya, a resident of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-17 and a native of Bihar, India, on charges of character assassination through social media.

Ray was arrested by the Cyber Bureau on Tuesday following a complaint from the victim, a woman with whom Raya had been in a relationship and connected through Facebook.

The woman accused Raya of secretly recording intimate activities and, after an altercation, sharing the videos with her relatives and friends via Messenger.

The police obtained a seven-day extension of Ray’s remand from the Kathmandu District Court, as part of the ongoing investigation into the case under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008.
