KATHMANDU: Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti) Chair Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has once again taken to the streets, leading a public pressure program at Maitighar, Kathmandu, on Wednesday to advocate for a directly elected presidential system.
Addressing the gathering, Bhattarai sharply criticized the leadership of major political parties, arguing that they have failed to resolve the nation’s problems despite holding power repeatedly.
He pointed out that the country has seen 11 government changes in the nine years since the constitution was promulgated, blaming political instability on the inefficiency of traditional leadership.
“The same leaders who claim that everything is going well while they are in power suddenly turn around and criticize the system the moment they lose their position. This kind of inconsistency does not benefit the country or its people,” Bhattarai said.
He highlighted that the ongoing political instability and governance failures cannot be resolved by the current system and called for the establishment of a directly elected presidential system along with a fully proportional parliamentary framework.
Bhattarai also dismissed the notion of reinstating the monarchy, stating that there is no need to revisit a system that the people have already abolished. He urged the public to rally behind a new political vision rather than looking to the past for solutions.
The Nepal Samajwadi Party has been increasingly vocal about its demand for a directly elected president, positioning itself as an alternative to the current political mainstream. Wednesday’s street demonstration is part of the party’s campaign to build public support for systemic political change.
