NC Chief Whip Ghimire apologizes in Parliament for advocating legalization of sex businesses

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire has issued an apology in Parliament for his controversial statement.

During today’s Parliament session, he apologized for remarks made three days ago, in which he suggested that sex businesses should be legalized in Nepal.

Ghimire had registered to speak at the beginning of the House of Representatives meeting.

After being given the floor by the Speaker, Ghimire clarified that his earlier statement was a personal opinion, not the official stance of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party.

During a special Parliament session, Ghimire had publicly stated that sex businesses should be legalized in Nepal. His comment sparked widespread criticism both inside and outside Parliament, including from his own party, the Nepali Congress.

In his speech today, Ghimire emphasized that his remarks were his personal views, not those of the party. He apologized for any negative impact his statement may have caused.

“The opinions I expressed were personal and made in a specific context as an MP. This is not the official position of the Nepali Congress Party or its parliamentary party. If my comments have caused any distress to the honorable members of Parliament or the general public, I respectfully apologize,” Ghimire said.
