Supreme Court clears path for implementation of National ID cards

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has paved the way for the implementation of the national identity card after dismissing a previously issued interim order on Sunday.

This decision allows the government to move forward with its plan to introduce the national ID system.

The full bench, consisting of Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut and Justices Abdul Aziz Musalman and Nripdhwaj Niraula, has dismissed the writ petition filed against the government’s decision.

The government had decided to make national identity cards mandatory for accessing social security allowances.

However, advocates Ram Bahadur Raut and Bimal Pokhrel had filed a writ seeking to halt the implementation of the decision.

Following an initial hearing, the Supreme Court had issued an interim order to suspend the program temporarily. The government later appealed the order.

The Supreme Court has issued some directive orders regarding specific aspects of the program, and the complete text of the verdict will be released soon, according to the court administration.

The government had initially decided on June 7, 2024, to mandate national identity cards for social security allowance distribution in 28 districts during the first phase.

Although plans were made to expand the initiative to an additional 38 districts starting January 14, 2025, implementation had been delayed due to the interim order.
