Fraud and organized crime case filed against Rabi Lamichhane and 13 other in Rupandehi

KATHMANDU: The Rupandehi District Attorney’s Office has filed a case against 14 individuals, including Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane, in connection with the Supreme Cooperative fraud case in Butwal on Sunday.

The case names Lamichhane, former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, along with his associate in the Gorkha Media Network, former DIG Chhabilal Joshi, as defendants.

The charges include cooperative fraud and organized crime.

The government attorney’s office had previously filed a case against 28 people, making the total number of defendants in the case now 42.

The new case, filed on Sunday, claims damages exceeding Rs 40 million.

Though the case was initially prepared for filing on Friday, delays in sending the original file to the Supreme Court prompted the registration of a supplementary case.

Following further investigation, the police submitted the report, which includes Lamichhane and Joshi among the accused.

Previously, on April 15, 2024, the Rupandehi District Attorney’s Office had filed charges against 28 individuals, including GB Rai, Supreme Chair Om Prakash Gurung, Cooperative Manager Sagar KC, and Kumar Ramtel.

The Area Police Office in Butwal had recommended filing cases against 42 individuals, including the additional 14.

Lamichhane was previously released after posting bail of Rs 6.5 million in the Kaski District Court and Rs 6 million in the Kathmandu District Court.

Joshi, who posted bail of Rs 8.8 million in Kaski, is currently held in the Kathmandu District Court.
