Brahmin-Chhetri dominate UML office-bearer positions, representation remains limited

KATHMANDU: The 11th General Convention of the CPN-UML has resulted in a leadership structure largely dominated by Brahmin-Chhetri candidates, with limited representation from other communities.

Out of the 19 elected office-bearers, 14 belong to the Brahmin-Chhetri community, accounting for 57.89 percent of the party’s top leadership positions. Only five office-bearers represent other communities.

According to the election results, the non–Brahmin-Chhetri representation includes one each from the Magar, Gurung, Madhesi, Rai, and Dalit communities.

The convention has also drawn attention to gender imbalance within the party’s top leadership. Among the 19 office-bearers, only one woman, Padma Kumari Aryal, was elected, securing a position as secretary.

Despite repeated commitments to inclusiveness and proportional representation, the outcome of the convention indicates that ethnic and gender diversity remains limited at the highest decision-making level of the party.
