PM Sushila Karki meets Nepali Congress youth leaders to discuss election environment
Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Wednesday held a meeting with young leaders of the Nepali Congress at her official residence in Baluwatar, focusing mainly on the political atmosphere ahead of the upcoming elections. According to Tarun Dal central member Sandeep Niraula, the discussion centered on the country’s evolving political situation and the preparations for the polls slated for March 5. During the meeting, PM Karki stressed that cooperation from all political parties is vital to build a favourable environment for timely elections.
Durga Prasai arrested ahead of planned Nov 23 shutdown
Durga Prasai, a medical entrepreneur and prominent monarchist activist who had been warning of a nationwide shutdown on November 23, has been arrested. A police team detained him from his residence in Thimi, Bhaktapur, and brought him to the District Police Complex in Bhadrakali, Kathmandu. According to authorities, Prasai is accused of attempting to disturb public peace and security. At a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, he had declared that his movement would continue and vowed to “bring Mechi to Mahakali to a halt.”
Tul Bahadur Kandel appointed Secretary of National Assembly
Tul Bahadur Kandel has been appointed as the new Secretary of the National Assembly, according to the Office of the President. President Ram Chandra Paudel approved the appointment based on the recommendation of National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal, in accordance with Article 106, Sub-Article (1) of the Constitution of Nepal. Kandel, a resident of Chaurideurali-8, Kavrepalanchok, will assume his duties with immediate effect.
Nepali Congress’s alternative faction pushes for special convention amid stalemate
With the 15th regular general convention of Nepali Congress unlikely to be held before the March 5 elections, the party’s alternative faction has stepped up preparations for a special convention to consolidate support and pressurize the party’s leadership. Following the return of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba from treatment in Singapore, the regular convention has not been scheduled, prompting leaders from the alternative faction, including Dr. Shekhar Koirala and the party’s joint general secretaries, to strategize a united front. The faction aims to gather all supporters in one place to increase pressure on the party’s establishment.
Over 1,500 security personnel deployed for NPL at TU Cricket Ground
More than 1,500 security personnel have been deployed at the TU Cricket Ground for the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), officials said. Deputy Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, heading the NPL security operations, stated that 1,223 personnel from the Nepal Police are stationed at the venue.
Opposition lawmakers demand Madhesh Provincial Assembly meeting
A group of 32 lawmakers has submitted a letter to Madhesh Provincial Assembly Deputy Speaker Babita Raut Ishar, urging her to convene a provincial assembly meeting. The move comes while a proposal against Assembly Speaker Ram Chandra Mandal, accusing him of not acting in accordance with his position, is under consideration. On Tuesday, members of the opposition party delegation met the Deputy Speaker to request the assembly session.
KP Sharma Oli says UML will pursue legal path against House dissolution
Former Prime Minister and UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has stated that his party will adopt legal remedies and a peaceful struggle in response to the dissolution of the House of Representatives. Two arrested in Kathmandu for defrauding 42 million promising UK work visas
A Kathmandu police team from the Valley Crime Investigation Office has arrested two people accused of defrauding 42 million rupees by promising work visas to the UK. The arrested suspects are 22-year-old Adarsh Timalsina, from Sindhupalchok’s Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-7 and currently residing in Gokarneshwar-7, Kathmandu, and 34-year-old Ashish Khokhali, from Indrawati Rural Municipality-4, Sindhupalchok, also residing in Gokarneshwar-7.
Nepal maintains BB- sovereign credit rating for 2025
Nepal has retained its sovereign credit rating of BB- for the year 2025, the same rating it received last year. Despite recent social and political challenges, annual natural disasters, and a global economic slowdown, maintaining last year’s rating reaffirms Nepal’s long-term debt repayment capacity internationally and underscores the country’s overall economic stability. The Ministry of Finance stated that, amid potential election-related expenditures and rising uncertainty, the government’s adoption of fiscal discipline, improvements in revenue management, prioritization of appropriate spending, commitment to timely elections, and uninterrupted implementation of strategic projects have strengthened international confidence in Nepal.
Pharmaceutical entrepreneurs protest at DDA demanding removal of sub-clause
The Nepal Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs Association on Tuesday staged a protest at the Department of Drug Administration (DDA), calling for the removal of a controversial sub-clause under the Drugs Act, 1978. The protestors said their serious attention had been drawn to provisions related to shop registration and renewal introduced through the ‘Some Nepal Amendment Act, 2025’. They argued that the new arrangement poses a direct threat to the livelihood of thousands of entrepreneurs, especially when minor administrative errors or delays could lead to the cancellation of business licenses.
Prasai supporters surround DAO Kathmandu after his midnight arrest
Supporters of Durga Prasai surrounded the District Administration Office (DAO) Kathmandu on Tuesday following his arrest. The protest erupted shortly after authorities decided to move forward with an investigation against Prasai under charges of disturbing public peace. According to police, Prasai is being presented at the Kathmandu DAO through the Office of the Government Attorney in Babarmahal. Kathmandu Police have already filed a case against him for public-offense-related charges.
Govt provides job to journalist Suresh Rajak’s wife
The government has employed Sujan Magiya, the wife of journalist Suresh Rajak, who died during the royalist protest in Tinkune on March 28. She has been appointed on a contract basis as a Computer Officer at the Security Printing Fund. The appointment was made on Monday in the presence of Minister for Communications Jagadish Kharel, while the fund’s Executive Director Devaraj Dhungana handed her the appointment letter.
Durga Prasai to remain in custody for 4 days for investigation
The Kathmandu District Administration Office has granted permission to keep medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai in police custody for four days to investigate charges related to disturbing public peace. Prasai, who was arrested at midnight on Monday, was taken to the Office of the Government Attorney and then presented at the DAO on Tuesday for a remand request. During the process, he told journalists that he had not been informed about the specific charges against him.
Biplav-led CPN (Maoist) registers for elections
Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ will participate in the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, after his party, CPN (Maoist), led by him, officially registered with the Election Commission on Tuesday. Previously, Biplav had been politically active under the name Nepal Communist Party (NCP), but the party had not gained official recognition. Now, he has registered the party using the name CPN (Maoist) from the armed conflict era. The Election Commission will issue the registration certificate to the party on Tuesday itself.

NEPSE rises 15.70 points as all sectoral indices advance
Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) closed on a high on Tuesday, gaining 15.70 points to settle at 2,566.07. The market saw a simultaneous rise in all sectoral indices, supported by an increase in overall trading activity. Turnover improved to Rs 4.10 billion, up from Rs 3.94 billion recorded the previous day. A total of 207 listed companies posted price gains, while 44 declined and five remained unchanged.
Oli brands those blaming him for Gen-Z crackdown as anti-UML
Nepali Congress leader and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday labeled those holding him responsible for the crackdown and casualties during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9 as anti-party elements. Addressing a meeting of the dissolved House of Representatives parliamentary party at the party’s central office in Chyasal, Oli said he cannot take responsibility for the destruction and violence that occurred during the Gen-Z movement.
Pathao Nepal introduces mandatory examination for riders
Ride-sharing service provider Pathao Nepal has revamped its rider selection and training system to make it more organized and transparent. Aspiring riders are now required to complete online training and pass a mandatory examination before joining the platform. According to Pathao Director Suraksha Hamal, prospective riders must have a Blue Book, driving license, and third-party insurance. Applicants upload these documents via the Pathao Drive app, after which the company verifies them within 24 hours.
Minister Pariyar represents Nepal in COP30, efforts on to establish Himalayan agenda
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr. Madan Prasad Pariyar, is representing Nepal at the Thirtieth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, which runs from November 10–21, 2025. Addressing the Ministerial Segment on Sunday, Minister Pariyar highlighted Nepal’s vulnerability to climate change, including retreating glaciers, severe droughts, unseasonal floods, and impacts on agriculture. He detailed Nepal’s ambitious NDC 3.0, aimed at achieving zero emissions by 2045, and emphasized that the country’s forest cover now exceeds 46 percent.
Over Rs 275 billion in tax dues yet to be collected: IRD report
The government is yet to recover tax dues amounting to Rs 275 billion from 330,912 taxpayers up to fiscal year 2024/25, according to the latest annual progress report of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) released on Monday. Of the total outstanding amount, Rs 94.95 billion remains unpaid from regular taxpayers, while Rs 180.10 billion is pending under administrative review involving 2,095 taxpayers, the report states.
Election Commission rejects claims of voter data leak, says system fully secure
The Election Commission (EC) has clarified that its website and voter database remain fully secure, dismissing media and social-media reports claiming that voter details had been leaked from its system. Issuing a statement on Monday, EC spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said that no unauthorized person can access the system, and reports suggesting otherwise are false and misleading.
