Nepal maintains BB- sovereign credit rating for 2025

KATHMANDU: Nepal has retained its sovereign credit rating of BB- for the year 2025, the same rating it received last year.

Despite recent social and political challenges, annual natural disasters, and a global economic slowdown, maintaining last year’s rating reaffirms Nepal’s long-term debt repayment capacity internationally and underscores the country’s overall economic stability.

The Ministry of Finance stated that, amid potential election-related expenditures and rising uncertainty, the government’s adoption of fiscal discipline, improvements in revenue management, prioritization of appropriate spending, commitment to timely elections, and uninterrupted implementation of strategic projects have strengthened international confidence in Nepal.

The rating also signals that a stable and positive economic foundation is taking shape within the country.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance, Tanka Prasad Pandey, noted that the rating will support efforts to increase foreign investment, expand cooperation with international development partners, and maintain a stable credit profile for future sovereign debt issuances in international financial markets. He added that rating stability is a crucial indicator for attracting long-term investment, particularly in the energy, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and digital economy sectors.
