UML to hold parliamentary party meeting today to discuss House dissolution

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML parliamentary party is convening a meeting this afternoon, bringing together lawmakers from the dissolved House of Representatives for the first time since the chamber was dissolved on September 12.

The meeting, scheduled for 1 PM at the party’s central office in Chyasal, will review the current political situation, the House dissolution, and UML’s future strategy, leaders said.

The House was dissolved after the Gen-Z uprising of September 8 and 9, which forced then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. Citing the absence of a parliamentary majority to form a new government, an interim administration led by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed on September 12.

On the interim government’s recommendation, President Ram Chandra Paudel dissolved the House and announced March 5, 2026, as the date for fresh parliamentary elections. The government has already allocated the required budget, and the Election Commission has finalized its election timetable, including candidate registration beginning January 20. Party registration for election purposes is open from November 17 to November 26.

The UML, which has consistently termed the dissolution unconstitutional, is pushing for House reinstatement. The party has collected signatures from lawmakers supporting reinstatement, with 32 UML and 46 Nepali Congress members signing in favor.

Leaders said the UML and Nepali Congress have been holding continuous dialogue with Speaker Devraj Ghimire on how to move the reinstatement demand forward.
