Oli calls for ‘neighbourhood security committees’ amid rising insecurity

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has called for the formation of “neighbourhood security committees” across the country, saying the rising sense of insecurity has made it necessary for citizens to assist the police in maintaining law and order.

Addressing a tea reception and interaction event organised by the party’s Contact Coordination Committee at the UML central office in Chyasal on Saturday, Oli said attempts were being made to weaken the state by spreading fear among the public.

“In such a situation, people must now take charge of their own safety,” Oli said. “When the government asks to release criminals but arrests political leaders instead, citizens have no choice but to protect themselves. So, every neighbourhood must form a security committee.”

The former prime minister accused the ruling coalition of fostering an environment of lawlessness and instability. He urged UML leaders and cadres to speak the truth “without fear.”

“Freedom of speech is our natural right,” Oli said. “We must not be silent while wrongdoers speak freely. Speak up for what is right, do not bow before falsehood.”

Drawing a symbolic reference to the Tihar festival, Oli likened the present political situation to the darkness of Aunsi night. “Just as we light lamps to chase away darkness, we must now light the flame of truth and courage to overcome the darkness spread by this gloomy government,” he said.

Oli also claimed that the country was not yet ready for elections, saying that the UML’s call to reinstate the dissolved Parliament was meant to restore political order. He argued that polls cannot be held until escaped convicts are arrested and looted weapons are recovered.

“Either there is an understanding between the government and the criminals, or they are helping each other,” Oli said. “Until that changes, elections will not be possible.”
