Durga Prasai claims police tried to ‘encounter’ him during Tinkune protest

KATHMANDU: Durga Prasai claimed on Monday that he narrowly escaped an alleged planned encounter by authorities during the March 28 Tinkune protest.

Speaking at a press conference at his residence in Bhaktapur, Prasai said he fled toward India after learning that plainclothes police were sent to kill him.

“They told me, ‘Plainclothes police have come to kill you; leave immediately.’ I left immediately,” Prasai said. “By the time curfew was imposed, I had already left Kathmandu. Four police teams were deployed to carry out the encounter. Had I not escaped that day, I would have been killed.”

Prasai said he only fled because of the threat to his life, asserting that he would never run away if there were no danger. He challenged current political leaders, declaring that once he assumes power, no one would be able to escape accountability.

“I tell the rulers: if you don’t kill me, I won’t run. When my time comes, no one will be allowed to flee. The time for Nepali citizens to assert themselves will come, and I will lead it,” he said.

Prasai also alleged that former CPN-UML General Secretary Madan Bhandari was deliberately assassinated. He claimed one person involved in Bhandari’s killing has died, while others are still alive, leaving it to time to reveal the full truth.

He further criticized Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden and announced plans to form a new political party, signaling a fresh political campaign.
