BIRATAGAR: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari arrived in Biratnagar on Monday to attend the annual celebration of the Udgosh Daily.
Upon arrival, she reaffirmed her association with the CPN-UML, stating that she continues to identify as an organized member and cadre of the party.
Recalling her 45-year-long affiliation with the UML, Bhandari highlighted her commitment to work for the party’s interests. She noted that she was elected president as a UML member and continues to consider herself a party worker.
Stressing the difference between monarchy and a republic, Bhandari said that once a term in office ends, any citizen can return to their previous social or political life. “Monarchy and republic are different. The presidency is term-based. Anyone elected by the people can return to their previous life after their tenure ends,” she said.
When asked about the central committee’s decision not to renew her party membership, Bhandari clarified that she had not received formal communication about the matter and was unaware of the party’s official stance. “Not all members are aware of everything; those in the committee may know,” she said, stressing that she is not currently part of the central committee.
Bhandari had announced her return to active politics on July 30, declaring her intention to challenge KP Sharma Oli’s leadership within the party. Shortly afterward, the UML central committee revoked her renewed party membership, effectively barring her from active political participation.
Despite the party’s decision, Bhandari has continued to assert that her political campaign will not be halted. She also emphasized that her party membership was formally renewed according to party statutes and procedures after her presidential tenure, under a special decision taken by the party at the time of her election.
Responding to allegations and criticisms, including claims of factionalism, Bhandari acknowledged that she is not free from criticism but defended her record and commitment to the party.
