NSU calls for unified, result-oriented student movement

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress, has called on all student organizations to unite and pursue more constructive and creative forms of protest, following the shutdown of educational institutions due to a nationwide student strike.

The appeal comes in response to Friday’s education strike initiated by the All Nepal National Free Students Union (Revolutionary), the student wing aligned with the majority faction of the CPN (Maoist) led by Dharmendra Bastola. The strike led to the closure of schools across the Kathmandu Valley.

While supporting the urgency of enacting a new Education Act that is student-friendly, NSU criticized the closure of schools, saying it goes against the spirit and purpose of the student movement.

The union stressed that there are alternative and more effective methods of protest that do not disrupt academic activities.

“To make the student movement result-oriented, powerful, and meaningful, a shared commitment is now necessary,” read a statement issued by NSU spokesperson Suraj Sejuwal. “In this context, I sincerely urge all active student organizations across the country to come together and take the movement forward in a creative and unified manner.”
