KATHMANDU: Vice-Chairperson of CPN-UML and Deputy Prime Minister cum Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel has said that the party leadership is fully capable of resolving the internal problems seen within the party.
Speaking at a meeting of UML’s affiliated mass organizations, Paudel stated that compared to other contemporary political parties, UML has relatively fewer internal issues. He said the party does not require external help to solve its problems.
“You won’t find a perfectly clean, flawless party—there’s no party like purified water or a freshly washed radish,” said Paudel, “But UML is one of the parties with the least internal friction. Whatever issues exist, the current leadership is competent enough to address them.”
Paudel said that any problems within the party will be resolved through policies and procedures. He also informed that preparations are underway for the upcoming Statute Convention, scheduled for early September.
According to Paudel, this convention will play a vital role in legally amending the party’s constitution and addressing implementation challenges that emerged after the party’s 10th National Convention. “The central committee will propose amendments to the statute, and we’ll send these drafts to the delegates in advance for broader enrichment,” he added.
He also cautioned party leaders and affiliated organizations not to engage in unnecessary speculation or division regarding party leadership before the Statute Convention. “Let’s not debate leadership issues prematurely,” he said, “There is no leadership crisis within the UML.”
Paudel further called on all party and mass organization members to overcome the current state of inactivity. “There was a time when thousands would take to the streets at the sound of a whistle,” he remarked, “Why have we become sluggish now?”
He said mass organizations are key vehicles for energizing the public and connecting new people to the party. He recalled how powerful UML-affiliated organizations were during the 1990 and 2006 movements, but noted that many have become inactive in recent times.
“Mass organizations are like the party’s seedbed,” Paudel said. “They are supposed to nurture new members and eventually integrate them into the party. But now, some groups are merely recycling existing party cadres, which doesn’t contribute to organizational growth.”
