KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba paid tribute to late party leader and former Minister of Industry Dhundiraj Shastri by draping the party flag over his mortal remains.
Shastri, who passed away on Monday at the age of 89 while undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College, was honored at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa on Wednesday, where his body was kept for final tributes.
President Deuba, along with other party leaders, cadres, and well-wishers, gathered to offer their final respects to the veteran leader. Shastri was a prominent figure in the party, having served as a former central member, minister, and a noted socialist thinker.
Speaking on the occasion, Deuba remarked on Shastri’s significant contributions to Nepal’s political transformation. He highlighted Shastri as one of the pioneers of federalism discourse in the country.
Meanwhile, the central working committee of the Nepali Congress, which convened at the Sanepa office on Wednesday, decided to lower party flags to half-mast for three days — from June 18 to 20— at the party’s central, provincial, and district offices to honor the late leader.
