MYAGDI: A ‘composite’ technology wall has been constructed in Singa Tatopani, Beni Municipality-4, Myagdi, to control river erosion and reduce the risk of flooding from the Myagdi River.
The project was carried out jointly by the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project, Pokhara, and the Water Resources, Irrigation, and Drinking Water Division Office, using funds allocated by both the federal and provincial governments for the fiscal year 2081/82 BS.
Dinesh KC, a resident of Tatopani, shared that both projects, which began last Falgun, were completed before the onset of the monsoon season.
Under one contract worth Rs. 15.5 million, Sahana-BRT JV Parbat constructed a composite wall beneath Saraswati Secondary School. The total estimated cost of this project was Rs. 27 million.
According to project engineer Narjung Gurung, a 66-meter-long, four-meter-wide, and three-meter-high concrete wall, with a gabion wall above it, was built to prevent erosion along the riverbank.
Additionally, from a separate budget of Rs. 5 million, Shanti Nirman Sewa constructed a concrete wall behind the Upper Tatopani Bazaar under the supervision of the Division Office.
Chief Divisional Engineer Jhalak Mohan Ojha confirmed that a 40-meter-long palisade, sharer, and gabion wall were completed as part of this contract.
Flooding in the Myagdi River in 2078 BS caused significant erosion in areas like Phaparkhet and Masar in Tatopani.
Two homes were destroyed in Masar, and several others remain at risk—including Saraswati Secondary School, the Jwalamai Bhagwati Ama Group building, and 17 houses in Masar. Approximately 100 households in Upper Tatopani Bazaar are also vulnerable to river erosion.
“In the past, we used only gabion walls to control the river, but this year, concrete walls have been introduced for better protection,” said Ward Chairman Ana Bahadur Khadka.
He added that a multi-year budget of Rs. 100 million has been secured in the current fiscal year to address river erosion in Singa Tatopani and Beni Bazaar.
Engineer Gurung further informed that a 102-meter composite wall is being built in Tatopani and a 165-meter composite wall behind Darwang Bazaar in Beni.
