Police preparing to release Oli and Lekhak on bail

KATHMANDU: Police are preparing to release KP Sharma Oli and Ramesh Lekhak on bail following a court order.

According to the Kathmandu Police, the Office of the Government Attorney has sent a letter directing authorities to release the two leaders under the responsibility of guarantors.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Thapa, chief of the Kathmandu District Police Office, said the police have initiated the process in line with the court’s directive.

Oli was arrested from his residence in Gundu, Bhaktapur on March 28.

Police had detained him based on the recommendation of a probe commission investigating the incidents of September 9 and 10, 2025.

On April 6, the Supreme Court issued a mandamus order to the government to release both Oli and Lekhak from custody.

A joint bench of justices Binod Sharma and Sunil Kumar Pokharel ruled that the two leaders could no longer be kept in detention after the third extension of their five-day remand period had expired.
