Landless citizens’ problems will be addressed soon: Minister Adhikari

KATHMANDU: Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Balaram Adhikari has said the problems of the landless citizens including the freed Kamaiyas, Haliyas and Harawacharawa would be addressed through the Land Problem Resolution Commission.

He said so during discussions with a delegation of the National Agricultural Bonded Labourers Struggle Committee held at the Ministry’s meeting hall in Singha Durbar today.

Stating that the government had declared in 2076 BS that the problems of landless people including Freed Kamaiya, Haliya and Harawacharawa had already been resolved and it was challenging to solve the remaining problems through other means.

Minister Adhikari urged all to take recourse to the Commission’s rules and procedures immediately even though discussions could be held on alternative ways to solve the problem.

“The government is sensitive to the rights of all the communities that have been declared free of the bonded labour practices so far, but the problem cannot be resolved with special provisions.

Therefore, I urge you all to come through the Commission’s due process and the Ministry will facilitate it,” he said, adding that the Ministry was also ready to discussion on other ways to arrive at a conclusion consulting with bodies and groups concerned.

The representatives of the struggle committee stressed the need for resolving the problem as per the agreement reached by the government with them at different times in the past.
