Teachers’ protest to continue Friday at Maitighar

KATHMANDU: The ongoing protest led by the Teachers’ Federation will continue in Kathmandu on Friday, marking two weeks of sustained demonstrations demanding policy reforms and protection of teachers’ rights.

Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi has urged all teachers and education staff to gather at Maitighar Mandala at 12 noon for a peaceful protest. According to Subedi, Thursday’s large turnout has reinvigorated the movement, fueling hope and solidarity among participants.

In a Facebook post, Subedi emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline, dignity, and restraint during the protests.

“We are on the verge of victory. At this time, we need to be more disciplined, dignified, and restrained. If the movement turns violent, it will eat away at the movement first,” he wrote, warning against any form of extremism or provocation.

He reminded teachers that the movement belongs to them and urged continued participation. “We, four lakh teachers and employees, and the movement we raise are ours alone. Let us reflect on this truth,” he stated, calling on everyone to join the demonstration in a peaceful and respectful manner.

The teachers’ movement has significantly affected the Maitighar-Baneshwor road section, with large gatherings and sit-ins taking place throughout the day. Despite the disruption, protestors have largely maintained order, heeding the Federation’s call for nonviolence.

Subedi expressed confidence in the protest’s outcome, saying that patience would lead to success. “Let’s wait patiently and with dignity for a few more days. Our victory is assured,” he said, encouraging protestors to continue their efforts with hope and determination.
