Odisha Government forms high-level committee to investigate Nepali student’s death and alleged mistreatment

KATHMANDU: The Odisha state government has formed a high-level committee to investigate the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal and the alleged mistreatment of over 700 Nepali students at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar.

Following Lamsal’s mysterious and suspicious death on Sunday afternoon, hundreds of Nepali students protested, demanding an investigation.

However, they were reportedly subjected to forceful eviction and physical assault by university authorities. In response, the Odisha government has initiated a formal inquiry.

The state government has placed KIIT University under high surveillance and established a fact-finding committee to probe the incidents.

Based on its findings, legal and administrative actions will be taken against those responsible for the mistreatment of Nepali students.

The high-level committee includes the Chief Secretary, the Principal Secretary of the Home Department, the Principal Secretary of the Women and Child Development Department, and the Commissioner-Cum-Secretary of the Higher Education Department.

“In light of the unfortunate incident at KIIT University, the Odisha government has taken serious note of the matter. Actions have already been taken, including the arrest of a security guard and the suspension of responsible officials,” the state government stated.

Additionally, the government is investigating reports that external individuals were brought in to assault the Nepali students. University officials found responsible for the violence will be held accountable as per the law.

Reaffirming its commitment to student safety, dignity, and well-being, the Odisha government assured swift and impartial justice. “The government is committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure justice, uphold the rule of law, and maintain social security,” the statement read.
