Odisha Government forms high-level committee to investigate Nepali student’s death and alleged mistreatment

The Odisha state government has formed a high-level committee to investigate the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal and the alleged mistreatment of over 700 Nepali students at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar.

Following Lamsal’s mysterious and suspicious death on Sunday afternoon, hundreds of Nepali students protested, demanding an investigation.

However, they were reportedly subjected to forceful eviction and physical assault by university authorities. In response, the Odisha government has initiated a formal inquiry.

Indian Police intensify investigation into the death of Nepali student in Odisha

Indian police have intensified their investigation into the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year Computer Science student at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Prakriti was found dead under suspicious circumstances in her hostel room on Sunday. Following a complaint by her cousin, Siddhant Sigdel, a third-year BTech (Mechanical) student at the same university, police arrested 21-year-old Advik Srivastava, also a third-year BTech (Mechanical) student at KIIT.

Siddhant reported that Prakriti had taken her own life due to misbehavior and harassment by Srivastava.

Prakriti Lamsal’s father demands justice after her death at KIIT University

Sunil Lamsal, the father of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, has reached Odisha, India, demanding a fair and thorough investigation into his daughter’s mysterious death at KIIT University.

Prakriti, a student at the university, was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday under suspicious circumstances.

Sunil, who traveled from Rupandehi, Nepal, to Bhubaneswar on Monday, has expressed deep concern over the incident. Speaking to Indian news agency ANI, he stated that the police are currently investigating the case and that they are awaiting the postmortem report.

MCC projects also halted in Nepal after USAID

Following the suspension of USAID projects, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. aid agency, has also faced setbacks.

The U.S. government sent a letter on February 14, stating that the implementation of MCC projects should not proceed at this time, according to the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday.

“The activities related to the projects being implemented under the compact signed between the Government of Nepal and the organization on September 14, 2017, which are financed by MCC funds, have been suspended as per the 90-day executive order issued by the U.S. President on January 20, 2025,” the ministry said.

Gold prices rise by Rs 700

Fluctuations in the international market have led to a rise in gold prices in the Nepali market.

Today, gold has increased by Rs 700 per tola, with the price reaching Rs 169,400 per tola. On Monday, the price was Rs 168,700 per tola, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association.

Meanwhile, the price of silver remains stable at Rs 1,970 per tola.

CAN proposes 10-point recommendations for Nepal’s first AI policy

The Computer Association Nepal (CAN) has submitted a 10-point recommendation to the government for Nepal’s first-ever national Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy.

The suggestions were presented to Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, following a critical study of the concept paper titled Use and Practice of AI in Nepal.

The recommendations, compiled by CAN’s AI Coordinator and Vice President Chiranjivi Adhikari, Prof Dr Sudan Jha, Advocate Diksha Raut, and Ganga Bhandari, highlight the need for a comprehensive AI policy tailored to Nepal’s specific needs.

Mabo, who faced black soot attack in Dharan, vows to build cable car in Taplejung

Padam Chenji Mabo, who was smeared with black soot by members of the ‘No Cable Car’ group in Dharan on Sunday, received a grand welcome in Taplejung.

During a pro-cable car rally in Phungling, Taplejung, on Tuesday, Mabo was honored with traditional khadas and garlands.

Mabo, who was physically assaulted and smeared with soot by Mukkumlung Conservation Joint Struggle Committee activists in Dharan-9, declared upon reaching Taplejung that the cable car project would be completed at all costs.
